Тranslation memory (ТМ) tools for localization: How do they work, and how effective can they be for quality translation?

Translation memory (TM) tools are computer-aided translation (CAT) tools that are designed to aid translations, they store segments, sentences and word combinations of previously translated texts, which can then be reused in future translations.

Тranslation memory (ТМ) tools

Translation memory (TM) tools work like this:

When translating a document, TM breaks the text into segments, sentences, phrases, and saves new pairs of parallel texts in two languages in the database.

When a translator begins translating a new piece of content, the TM tool will scan the text and search for any matches with previously translated content in the database. If a match is found, it offers to use the saved translation, the translator can then choose to either reuse the existing translation or modify it to fit the context of the new content.

This can significantly speed up the translation process.

The use of translation memory tools can significantly improve the efficiency and quality of translation, massively reduce the time and cost of localization, especially when localizing documents with a large amount of repetitive text, such as instruction manuals, user interfaces, and technical documentation.

However, to achieve maximum efficiency, it is essential to have well-trained translators who know how to properly use TM and edit saved translations for maximum translation accuracy and quality.

The effectiveness of TM tools for quality translation can vary depending on the quality and consistency of the previously translated content in the database. If the TM database contains accurate, high-quality translations, then the tool can be very effective at ensuring consistency and reducing translation time.

However, if the database contains inaccurate or inconsistent translations, then the tool can actually hinder the quality of the translation by providing incorrect or inappropriate suggestions. Additionally, TM tools may struggle with translations that contain a lot of industry-specific jargon or highly creative language, where exact matches may be less common.

Overall, TM tools can be a powerful tool for localization projects when used appropriately and with high-quality translation memory databases.

However, they should not be relied on as a replacement for professional human translators, who can understand the nuances, and cultural characteristics and context necessary for truly accurate and effective translations.
